Bio

Bruce Ballengee is an amateur naturalist with a lifelong passion for nature, especially birds and plants.  A long time Dallas resident, Bruce is a member of the North Texas Master Naturalists, the Native Plant Society of Texas, Dallas Audubon, and the Native Prairies Association of Texas.  He chairs the Advisory Board for Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center and is a member of the Trails Maintenance Committee for Cedar Ridge Preserve.  As a level 3 Certified Native Landscape artist, Bruce has installed a native landscape at his home and is an instructor for Levels 1 and 2 in the Native Landscaping Certification Program.

A Walk Through a Canyon

Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center in Cedar Hill, TX is nestled at the mouth of a sheltered canyon where east and west ecosystems converge and time moves at Nature’s pace, allowing visitors to experience the Black-chinned hummingbird of the west and the Flowering Dogwood of the east in one unique natural area. Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center owns and manages about 220 acres of nearly pristine habitat on a limestone escarpment with towering Shin Oaks and Junipers. The Center currently has 2 miles of trails, a small restored prairie, children's outdoor play area, and the C.E. Doolin Visitor Center where visitors can watch birds indoors from the Canyon View room.

During this guided walk led by Bruce Ballengee, visitors will learn more about the history and pre-history of the canyon, native trees blooming now you may want to consider for your own yard, and a few rich stories about our plant speices.  Mr. Ballengee, a resident of Cedar Hill, chairs the Center’s advisory board and is a member of Audubon, North Texas Master Naturalists, Native Plant Association of Texas and the Native Prairies Association of Texas.
