26th Annual Trout Lily Walk at Spring Creek Forest
When: Saturday, February 23, 2019 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: Spring Creek Forest Preserve, 1770 Holford Road, Garland, TX 75040, the circular parking lot on the east side of Holford
Visit Spring Creek Forest Preserve and go through several stations, staffed by Master Naturalists and other volunteers, to learn about trout lilies and other unique aspects of the forest and prairie ecosystems in the park.
Come on Saturday, February 23, any time between 10:00 a.m. and noon. When you arrive, volunteers at the pavilion will welcome you and give you introductory information. Then, we will send you along the clearly marked trail to the Trout lily field.
Tom Frey, a regionally acclaimed naturalist, will be with us again for the 26th year. Tom always has new information about our Preserve and its ecology as you stroll through fabulous trees to find the Trout lilies, one of the first plants to flower in the spring. The tiny flowers are only in bloom from about mid-February through the middle of March. Then, they disappear until next year. When you arrive, volunteers at the pavilion will welcome you and give you introductory information. Then, we will send you along the clearly marked concrete trail to the trout lilies. Tom Frey, our advisor, mentor, and friend will be there to describe these remarkable plants. Volunteers will also be on the trail to describe forest, aquatic, and prairie ecosystems within the park, and to discuss why invasive species are a problem in our open spaces.
This format helps solve the problem of so many folks in line on the walk that they can’t hear the forest information. It also allows folks to go at their own pace rather than having to follow a group; no one gets impatient waiting for others to catch up and each can spend as much time at a station as they want. Some like to spend a lot of time taking photos and discussing the forest. Others like to hear just a little bit and then move on. With this walk format, it is your choice. We hope to see you there!
